Finding a good plumber is like finding a good dentist — once you have one, you hang on to them. Here's how to pick the right one in Islington, Haringey, Hackney, Camden and beyond.
1. Look for a genuine local address
Many “local plumber” websites are national lead-generation sites that pass your job to whoever is free. A real local business with a real address — like ours in Finsbury Park, N4 — can usually get to you faster.
2. Read recent reviews
Look at Google reviews and how the business responds to criticism. A handful of honest four-star reviews is often more believable than a wall of perfect ones.
3. Check Gas Safe for any gas work
Anyone working on boilers or gas appliances must be Gas Safe registered. Ask to see the ID card and check what they're qualified for.
4. Ask how they charge
Hourly or fixed price? What's included in the first hour? Are evenings charged differently? Good plumbers answer clearly.
5. Get a quote before work starts
For anything beyond a quick repair, insist on a written quote. It should list labour, parts and what's excluded.
6. Ask about guarantees
A confident plumber guarantees their workmanship. Parts should come with manufacturer warranties.
7. Notice how they communicate
Did they turn up on time, or call if running late? Did they explain the problem? Did they protect your floors and clean up? Those small things tell you a lot.
